FIRST LEGO LEAGUE 2018
Pupils from Year 5 and 6 took part in the Regional First Lego league Competition on Wednesday 31st January. The competition was held at Sage, Newcastle and involved 10 teams from Primary Schools across North Tyneside. The team, named HydroEve won two awards, ‘Best Newcomer’ and the ‘Champions Award’ coming in first place across the whole competition.
Pupils have been given the opportunity to work with professionals from Northumbria Water, Sage and Tharsus Robotics learning invaluable skills and knowledge.
HydroEve were then invited as a team to attend the National competition which was held in Bristol. Pupils from Riverside joined forces with the other successful school from North Tyneside, Cullercoats Primary School to travel on a coach down to Bristol. Pupils, their parents and coaches stayed overnight in a lovely Premier Inn and thoroughly enjoyed their breakfast before heading off on Saturday morning to the National Competition. The pupils worked hard through the day on the three main tasks, including ‘Core Value Challenge’, ‘Robot Game’ and ‘The Project’.
The experience has been invaluable for our pupils and we thoroughly look forward to next years competition with some ideas already in the pipeline.
Quotes from professionals working closely with pupils from Riverside Primary School:
“It was terrific to see the Riverside Team showing plenty of energy and a lot of smiles, and the fact that you were working with professionals on the day still tweaking and trying to improve was really great to see.” Steve McShane, SAGE.
“We had a lovely day and the children are such a lovely group to work with…Their presentation was excellent. Nice clear voices and everyone contributed…Their core values were also strong. They work well as a team.” Paul Guy, Software Engineer, SAGE.
