The Butterfly Room

‘The Butterfly Room’

The Butterfly Room is a carefully designed classroom created to meet the needs of pupils with Education Health Care Plans (EHCPs), particularly those whose primary areas of need are communication and interaction. The environment is calm, structured, and nurturing, offering children a safe space where they can learn, communicate, and explore at their own pace. Its layout is intentionally organised to encourage regulation and engagement and to help pupils understand routines, expectations, and to navigate the school day.

The room is divided into several key areas, each with a clear purpose. A sensory area provides pupils with opportunities to regulate their emotions and engage in calming sensory experiences, using lights, textures, and sensory tools. The soft-play corner supports movement, spatial awareness, and safe physical exploration, helping children develop confidence and body awareness. There is also an intervention workstation where staff can work individually with pupils on tailored activities, as well as a dedicated snack area that promotes independence, communication, and social interaction during daily routines.

Every child in the Butterfly Room works on personalised targets linked to their individual stage of development. Staff use play-based learning experiences as a foundation, allowing pupils to learn through hands-on exploration and meaningful interaction. A wide range of toys and resources are available to support imaginative play, problem-solving, and early academic skills. These resources are chosen to encourage engagement, curiosity, and communication.

To further support communication and interaction, the room incorporates a variety of visual aids and structured supports. Visual timetables, choice boards, and symbol cards help children understand expectations and express their needs more effectively. These tools foster independence and reduce anxiety by providing clarity and predictability throughout the day. The Butterfly Room offers a warm, supportive, and highly individualised learning environment where children can thrive, grow, and reach their full potential.
