Supporting Pupils with SEND
Across all areas of the National Curriculum at Riverside Primary School, teachers set suitable learning challenges, respond to pupils’ diverse learning needs and modify the curriculum to remove any potential barriers to learning and assessment for particular individuals or groups of pupils. Teachers have an excellent knowledge of the needs of all pupils in their classes and are able to plan personalised and differentiated learning experiences which meet the needs of individual pupils. Inclusion is always at the centre of any teaching approach.
Supporting pupils with SEND in Science
Children with special educational needs will be encouraged in all aspects of Science appropriate to their ability. Teachers will plan tasks to match their ability and additional support may be given by an additional adult to enable pupils to progress and demonstrate achievement.
Provision will be made for pupils who need to use –

* Non-sighted methods of reading.
* Technological aids eg sound buttons to aid writing.
* Aids to allow access to practical activities within and beyond school
* Word banks and picture cards that the learner can point or refer to when explaining scientific processes.
* Differentiated resources eg differentiated scales on measuring cylinders
* Drama to explain concepts and embed key vocabulary
* Step-by-step instructions, which are then modified with visuals and/or more precise steps for learners needing additional guidance.
* Oracy-led sessions, with visuals to support the access of all learners,
* Additional adults will support children with SEND including acting as a scribe, explaining answers or writing up an experiment that the child describes verbally.
* More simple representation of data eg using pictograms
* Use of manipulatives and resources used in maths lessons to support learning in science.
* Use of concrete resources and comparisons.
* Repetition of key vocabulary and language
* Photos, videos and simulations to help children learn and make sense of the scientific content.
